This solenoid is critical for purging gas vapors from the gas tank into the intake manifold. With age, the black ports become brittle and eventually crack when working in that area. It is recommended to also replace the attached vacuum hoses when replacing the solenoid as the hoses become brittle and potential sources for vacuum leaks.
